Preamble
The University of Maryland Baltimore County Council
of Majors for Biology shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the Committee
of Student Life, the Student Government Association, and the right of review
of the President of the University or his specifically designated
representative.
Article I - Name
Section I: The name of this organization shall be
the Biology Council of Majors of the University of Maryland Baltimore
County.
Article II - Purpose
Section I: The purpose of this organization is to
promote the achievement of the professional ambitions of its members and to
serve as a means of social contact among them.
Article III - Membership
Section I: All students are free to join regardless
of race, color, nationality, health status, or gender.
Section II: To be eligible for membership, a person
must be currently associated with the University of Maryland Baltimore
County, either of full-time or part-time status.
Article IV - Offices and Elections
Section I: The offices of this organization shall
consist of the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Public
Relations.
Section II: The advisor(s) of this organization
shall be faculty or staff members who are closely involved with the needs
and concerns of the biology students.
Section III: Only member in good standing are
eligible to vote and participate in elections.
Article V - Meetings
Section I: Meetings shall be conducted as seen fit
by the presiding officer of the said organization. Section II: Those present
at regular meetings of the organization shall be considered a quorum for
regular business. The two-thirds (2/3) majority of the quorum shall carry
any vote.
Article VI - Amending the Constitution
Section I: Proposed amendments to this Constitution
shall be presented to the membership and the Executive Board at least one
week prior to the vote thereon.
Section II: Two-thirds (2/3) majority of the quorum
present the meeting in which the amendments is proposed is required to amend
this Constitution.
Article VII - Removal from Office
Section I: To remove any individual(s) from office,
a typed request containing the reason(s) for removal is to be signed by the
members in good academic standing and submitted to the Executive Board at
least one week before the next general meeting of the membership. At that
general meeting, the Presiding Officer will present the request for removal
of the individual(s) and initiate a vote. A two-thirds (2/3) majority is
required for removal from office.
By-Laws
I - Membership
Section I: Membership of the Biology Council of
Majors shall consist of students majoring in a biology-related field.
Section II: A member in good standing is one who is
active in at least one council meeting per semester.
II - Executive Board
Section I: The Executive Board shall consist of the
officers of the organization, the advisors(s), and the officers-elect. The
President shall be presiding officer over the Executive Board. Should the
President be unable to conduct the meeting, the Vice-President will assume
the duties and responsibilities of the President and conduct the meeting.
Section II: The Executive Board shall be
responsible for all matters pertaining to the policy, conduct, and
activities of the Society.
Section III: The President and Vice-President shall
determine the time, dates, and location of the meetings.
III - Meetings
Section I: Regular meetings involving participation
of the members shall be held periodically. There shall be at least one
meeting every month during each semester.
Section II: Special meetings may be called by the
President or the Vice-President. Members shall be notified of these special
meetings at least one week in advance.
IV - Elections
Section I: A members demonstrating leadership
abilities and continual dedication to the council may be nominated for the
Office of President, Vice-President, Public Relations Treasurer, and/or
Secretary by any person of the Executive Board, quorum, and/or the advisor(s).
Section II: The term of Office for the Executive
Board shall be one academic year. Elections will be held every year in the
spring semester.
Section III: A simple majority of the members in
good standing will determine the officers of the council for the upcoming
year by a secret ballot.
Section IV: Nominations for officers will be held
two weeks prior to the election.
Section V: A special election may be held to fill
any vacant office. Should the special election be necessary, it will be held
within four regular semester weeks of the time the vacancy occurs.
V - Duties and Responsibilities of the Officers
Section I: The President(s) shall be the presiding
officer over all meetings held by the Biology Council of Majors. He/She,
with the advice the Executive Board, shall appoint committees as deemed
necessary.
Section II: The Vice-President(s) shall assist the
President in all his/her duties, and in the absence of the President, shall
immediately execute the duties of the President.
Section III: The Treasurer(s) shall receive and be
responsible for all monies, and maintain an accounting system which meats
the guidelines for the Student Government Association regulations. A budget
will be submitted for the academic year by the Treasurer to the Student
Government Association.
Section IV: The Secretary(s) shall keep the minutes
of all meetings, keep the roster of all members, and conduct all
correspondence required by the organization.
Section V: The Public Relations officer(s) shall be
for advertising and keeping the membership informed of the organizations
activities.
